1. You Can Put Your Name On It* (Don Henry / David Womack)

12/31/2000 "In The Round" with: Gary Nicholson: lead guitar Kevin Welch: guitar (courtesy of Dead Reckoning Records) Ashley Cleveland: vocals

A rockin' little New Years Eve. My whole family was there! So were the Nicholson's and assorted Welch's. Can you hear the noisemakers in the background? Woo Hoo! The Bluebird…our home away from home! David and I wrote this song almost as fast as it takes to listen to it once! We hadn't written together in a couple years since he'd moved back down to Mississippi so the floodgates were opened. We wrote "Blue Highway"in the 80's for country singer John Conlee many years ago. That was my first "cut" in Nashville and was a single for John that went to #15 in the Billboard Country Charts.

2. B.F.D (Don Henry / Craig Carothers)
[Lyrics]
3/5/99 "In The Round" with: Vince Melamed: piano Gary Burr: lead guitar and vocals Jim Photoglo: vocals

We laughed every minute while we wrote this one! Craig had come over that day hell-bent on writing a song that someone would record. I tried to convince him this idea was exactly that. When Kathy Mattea recorded it, he was convinced at last. As Craig puts it, "This one's a homerun everytime" BFD went as high as #63 on the Billboard charts...then died a quick but painful death! Kathy did a great "Lyle Lovettish" version of the song but it just didn't become a hit. I really believe the song is a hit for somebody. It's a "home run" every time I play it out and I think Kathy still performs it in her shows with great response. Craig Carothers and I got together to write one day and went throught the usual ritual of tryin' to write that "hit" song... just bland enough for radio and just good enough to put our names on it. We were jokin' around when the acronym "it aint no BFD" came out . Then one of us said "he's got his CMT" then the other said "No S-E-X". Then the other said "but that's OK" and we started laughing! Then one of us said "at least he ain't no SOB" and it was answered with "like that PHD" We both sang who "took his wife and moved out to LA" Man, we were on the floor laughing so hard.It was one of those juvenile laughs that just won't stop...I mean we were laughing so hard that we were crying! Then we made a list of acronyms and chose the ones that people use more like words. Then we tried to make 'em work. We got lucky and stumbled onto a couple of silly one's....like F-R-E....E and P-I-L-O, changing the joke up a bit and kind of giving the listener a peek into the guy's personallity...which is probably the reason she left him itn the first place. That was the most fun I've ever had writing a song. We literally laughed our way through it!

[Lyrics]
3/5/99 "In The Round" with: Vince Melamed: accordion keyboard Gary Burr: lead guitar Jim Photoglo: vocals

Phillip's idea. The first song we wrote together. Also the first time the "In The Round" boys heard it. They fell in rather nicely, I must say. It takes all kinds o' kinds!

A benefit Gary Harrison had put together, and I had the nerve to sabotage him with his own recorded words! Thanks Gary. We've had some great "In The Round's" together. I wrote this in '94. It's the first song I wrote that my son Dylan would sing along with. He'd sit in the backseat of the van and sing "Baa, Baa, Baa."

7. Back On The Farm Again (Don Henry)
[Lyrics]
1/16/96 Alive Hospice Benefit "In The Round" with: Bill Lloyd: lead guitar & vocals Kim Richey: vocals (courtesy of Mercury Records) Byron House: bass I'm glad this is documented.

Bill, Kim, Byron (and usually Pat Buchanan but he was sick this night) and I played together a lot during this period. We were kind of a band. A first for me, and a thrill to be included with these great musicians who have all, unlike me, had years of gig and road experience. (But I'm catching up!) The Thompson Brothers had a small hit with this song. Bill Lloyd produced a great Beatlesque track on them. Their video (with the smoldering cow pies) still pops up occasionally on CMT.

I think we'd just finished this song. I flubbed up the lyrics on the bridge so here they are: "…Lets the air out of your tires Turns your sparks into misfires Leaving big ol' potholes in your soul" Damn! Sorry Pete. Beep beep, beep beep, yeah!

9. Beautiful Fool (Don Henry)
[Lyrics]
1/16/96 Alive Hospice Benefit "In The Round" with: Bill Lloyd: lead guitar & vocals Kim Richey: vocals (courtesy of Mercury Records) Byron House: bass

A tribute to one of my greatest heroes. Written from what I remember of my young point of view. I'm glad I got to be alive during an era of true heroism that he represented. To Martin Luther King Jr… Thank you for this song. I still believe. Kathy Mattea has covered this as well as The Four Bitchin' Babes. I think David Wilcox might have performed it too. Kim Richey sang it on the "Freedom Sings" CD that the First Amendment Center put out in 2000. People tell me they hear it around a lot. It's nice to have one with a life of it's own. (Yes, for you scrupulous few. I realize Cronkite was on CBS and Disney was on NBC, but it's all the same to a kid when your parents interrupt The Wonderful World Of Disney. Now go have a sandwich or something)

13. Sun, Son (Shining On The Water) (Anna McGarrigle)
[Lyrics]
1995 A night with my band: Eric Darken: percussion Dave Jacques: bass Brian Cumming; saxophone Molly Felder & Adie Grey: vocals

I did a little split bill this night with one of Nashville's grooviest pop combos, Swan Dive (Bill DeMain and Molly Felder). Man, we're spoiled with some of the world's greatest musicians here in Nashville! Thanks guys and gals for letting me use this track. I've always loved the McGarrigles. This one's from their album "Love Over & Over". I said that they both wrote this song, but I was wrong. Anna wrote it alone. Give's me the goose bumps.

15. Where've You Been (Don Henry / Jon Vezner)
[Lyrics]
An early evening showcase in 1994

Thanks Kathy Mattea for giving my career some mileage. Thanks Jon for letting me in on a very personal song. This was a special night showcase that Paul Rothchild had put together for me to play for Jac Holzman. Dedicated to the late great Paul Rothchild… thanks for believing, my friend. This is the record you wanted to make.
